On the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, Muslims observe the signs of Laylatul Qadr night. Recognizing its signs allows believers to seize its blessings, engage in deep worship, and seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
In this article, we will discuss all the signs of Laylatul Qadr as described in hadith and quran, as well as, the reasons behind its uncertainty.
Signs of Laylatul Qadr
The Quran and Hadith provide clear signs of Laylatul Qadr, distinguishing it from all other nights of Ramadan.
Allah says in the Quran: “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” [Surah Al-Qadr | 97:3-5]
One of the strongest indications comes from the hadith of Ubada ibn As-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The sign of Laylatul Qadr is that it is clear, serene, and radiant, as if a bright moon is shining. It is calm and peaceful, neither too cold nor too hot, and no shooting stars are seen until morning.” [Hadith | Musnad Ahmad]
Another narration mentions that the night of power is most likely found in the last ten nights of Ramadan, with a stronger possibility on the 27th night.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd nights.” [Hadith | Sahih Muslim]
These signs indicate that Laylatul Qadr is a peaceful, illuminated, and spiritually uplifting night, free from disturbances.
Weather Signs Associated with Laylatul Qadr
Among the most discussed signs of the night of power are changes in the weather, the moon, and the sun. Here are these signs in details:
Rain
There is no authentic hadith that confirms rain as a sign of Laylatul Qadr. However, some scholars suggest that a cool and peaceful atmosphere is a characteristic of this night.
Some people associate a gentle rain with Allah’s mercy descending upon the earth, but this is not a fixed sign.
The Moon
In a hadith recorded by Imam Muslim, Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once said: “Who remembers when the moon rose on that night, resembling half a bowl?” [Hadith | Sahih Muslim]
This description indicates that the moon may appear softer or less bright than usual on Laylatul Qadr.
The Sun
One of the most well-known signs of Laylatul Qadr is how the sun appears the next morning.
Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The sun rises the next morning with no rays, as if it were a dish.” [Hadith | Sahih Muslim]
This means the sun appears soft and white, without its usual harsh brightness, due to the immense presence of angels during the night.
Spiritual Significance of Keeping Laylat al-Qadr’s Timing Uncertain
The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is unknown, and this is a mercy from Allah.
If we knew the exact night, many would focus only on that night and neglect the rest of Ramadan. By keeping it hidden, Allah encourages us to increase our devotion throughout the last ten nights.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized this wisdom when he said: “I came out to inform you of Laylatul Qadr, but because two people were arguing, the knowledge of it was taken away. However, it may still be better for you; seek it in the last ten nights.” [Hadith | Sahih Bukhari]
This teaches us that continuous effort, sincerity, and devotion are what truly matter.
