Zakat al-mal plays a significant role in strengthening the foundations of the Islamic community and enhancing the economies of Islamic countries such as the UAE. Our site is dedicated to highlighting its importance in supporting community members who are poor and in need, and providing necessary assistance by ensuring basic life essentials like education.

In this article, we discuss zakat al-mal in the United Arab Emirates; what its nisab is, its key rulings, and how zakat al-mal is calculated in the United Arab Emirates.

Zakat al-mal in the UAE

The UAE implements zakat al-mal as defined by Islamic Sharia; zakat al-mal is obligatory for every free Muslim if their al-mal reaches the nisab; and the nisab for zakat al-mal is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold.

Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah verse 103: “Take from their al-mal charity to purify and sanctify them with it, and pray for them; indeed, your prayers are a source of security for them; Allah is Hearing, Knowing.” This means that discharging zakat al-mal is an obligation for Muslims, and it must be performed flawlessly.

Zakat al-mal is an amount of zakatable al-mal that is discharged after a Muslim’s al-mal reaches the nisab threshold. Various forms of al-mal that are zakatable include:

 1- Cash 2- Gold 3- Silver 4- Trade goods

This zakat is also obligatory on livestock including sheep, cattle, and camels.

Zakat al-mal Rate in the UAE

The rate of zakat al-mal in the UAE, as stated by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is “one-quarter of ten percent”; which is equivalent to 2.5%.

“One-quarter of ten percent” is the value to be discharged from the total al-mal, meaning that after calculating the zakatable al-mal they wish to discharge zakat for, the payer discharges zakat at a rate of 2.5%.

How to Calculate the Nisab for Zakat al-mal in UAE Dirhams

The zakat al-mal rate is 2.5%, and the payer can easily calculate the zakat they wish to discharge.

Example: If a payer wants to discharge zakat on 10,000, they can calculate their zakat as follows: Divide the amount by 100, and the result is then multiplied by 2.5. So, the calculation is: 10,000 ÷ 100 = 100 100 × 2.5 = 250 dirhams.
