Modern scholars have placed great emphasis on family education and child rearing, exploring the most effective methods for teaching the younger generation and utilizing the best tools to impact the lives of learners.
In this article, we will discover how family upbringing and good role models can shape an outstanding generation, relying on the educational methods used by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
We will also examine the influence of both good and bad role models on individuals and society.
The Importance of Family Education and Role Models in Teaching
The life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provides us with the greatest examples and effective educational methods.
The Quran states, “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day” (Quran 33:21), and “Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so from their guidance take an example” (Quran 6:90). One of the most important educational methods used by the Prophet was teaching by example.
Thus, role models are very important in education and achieve what mere advice and guidance cannot.
Definition of Role Model
A role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.
Allah described Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as a model of guidance, obedience, and gratitude, and commanded us to follow him by saying:
“Then We revealed to you, ‘Follow the religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.'” (Quran 16:123)
Importance of Role Models
The significance of role models lies in their profound impact on the individual and society, either by reforming or corrupting them. They play a significant role in:
- Facilitating the transmission of knowledge.
- Creating a competitive atmosphere.
- Accustoming individuals to follow specific rules.
Types of Role Models and Their Impact on Individuals and Society
Positive Role Models
One of the simplest and most effective educational methods, positive role models play a significant role in conveying messages to individuals and groups. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was an exemplary role model for his companions in all aspects of life.
A prime example is the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, where Umm Salama suggested that the Prophet begin by shaving his head and sacrificing his animal.
When he did, the companions followed suit. Similarly, he taught Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) how to perform ablution.
Certain qualities must be present in a person to be a good role model, including:
- Faith
- Worship
- Good morals
- Respect for the law
Positive Effects of Good Role Models
Good role models have significant positive effects on both individuals and society, including:
- Creating a knowledgeable and capable generation following the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
- Eliminating widespread corruption in society.
- Playing a prominent role in encouragement and motivation.
- Inspiring individuals to strive for excellence and raise their aspirations.
Negative Role Models
In contrast, negative role models lead to societal decline, lower social standards, spread of corruption, and loss of trust. Emulating those who are misguided and corrupt can result in deviant behaviors and societal decay.
The Quran states, “Rather, they say, ‘Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided.’ And similarly, we did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, ‘Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps following.'” (Quran 43:22-23).
From this, we see that many parents have either elevated their children’s education and upbringing or led them astray. Therefore, parents must pay more attention to the educational aspect, as it has a significant direct impact on our sons and daughters. Especially in this fast-paced era, children can be influenced by their peers and teachers in every action.
If they are righteous, this goodness will be transferred to them.
It is important to note that building a strong and distinguished society begins with constructing a family that embodies morals and noble principles, thereby positively influencing those around them.
